Michael Darling

Born 1961 in North London, my early studies took in an art foundation course in High Wycombe followed by a combined Fine Art (painting) and English Literature course at Exeter University and the Exeter College of Art & Design, England. My first work experience was drawing, painting and curating at the Spacex Gallery in Exeter moving on to commercial art and design work for the music industry with Stylorouge in London. In 1990 I began my love affair with magazines in Munich at the Condé Nast publishers designing and illustrating for their main fashion titles; Vogue and GQ.

I have shared my passion for drawing and painting with a number of teaching courses at art centres, schools and colleges and look forward to continuing and intensifying this process with Sketch Club Munich.

Drawing has accompanied me throughout all of this - working from observed life – whether it be people on a train, trees in the landscape, details in the undergrowth or dancers warming up – these living lines continue to inspire me.

Welcome to Sketch Club Munich:

from pencil to paper to the joy of drawing

At Sketch Club Munich I offer regular courses and workshops highlighting different aspects of drawing - from learning the mark-making potential of pencils, charcoal and graphite, through composing with lines and forms to creating a finished picture.

Based on three rotating Drawing Basic modules – Still-life, Light & Shadow, and Composition – as well as one Open Workshop – Lifelines – Sketch Club Munich provides the opportunity for everyone to experience the fascinating concentrated flow of drawing: challenging if you want it to be but at its core meditative and rewarding. All materials are provided for these sessions.

Upcoming themes this year:

Colour-Full – drawing and sketching with coloured pencils and watercolours – add fresh emotional energy to your palette and to your sketchbook!

Walk n draw – with a small sketchbook (max. A5), a couple of pencils and a sharpener we'll be walking along the river Isar, through the Maisinger Gorge or around Lake Starnberg - with the aim to capture small details and sweeping impressions of the nature around us.

Digital drawing  creating digital drawings on a screen - learn what different apps can do and realise the potential of iPad art!

Let the creative juices and lines flow!
